The Flu

Over two years ago I posted on my other blogs about the distinct possibility of a pandemic at some point in the future - because there is ALWAYS another one coming, eventually. And I posted some thoughts and suggestions on how to protect yourself and your family to a greater extent, in the event a pandemic actually hits us.

As yet, there is no pandemic. But it is increasingly likely that one will occur, sooner or later.

Now, some folks say, "Big Deal - this isn't 1918. That can't happen in this age of modern medicine."

Correction: the CDC says it will take from 4-6 months to develop and begin to ship any vaccine. And in this day and age of nearly instant world travel, it only takes disease 6 days to travel to every point on the globe. Meanwhile, while the CDC does their thing, up to 90 million people could die worldwide - and at least 2 million right here in America. And that is only if the pandemic is NO WORSE than the one of 1918.

Therefore, believing that an ounce of prevention is worth a ton of non-existent vaccine, I put together these suggestions. It might be a good idea to give them some thought, and begin to prepare, just in case. Bear in mind, these suggestions are mostly in the event a pandemic actually comes to a town near you.

In The Event of A Deadly Pandemic
  • Do not go to school, and avoid public exposure as much as possible
  • Keep out of public places as much as possible. If you must shop, choose off hours to limit exposure to others. Use MRE's and your own food as much as possible, to avoid the need to shop (replace MRE's at earliest convenience)
  • Do not accept change - bring exact change, if possible
  • Wear face masks whenever in proximity of people
  • Wear latex gloves, to avoid contact with doorknobs, gas pumps etc. When removing gloves, do so from inside out, careful not to touch outside of gloves with your exposed fingers, or touching outside of glove to your skin or clothing. Dispose of carefully, then wash hands for at least 30 seconds in HOT water
  • Wash hands after every time you go out. Wash regularly & often, 30 seconds minimum
  • Change all clothing after going in public, and wash in hot water
  • Each person should be careful not to bring any contamination back into the home. Use the precautions
  • If you must use a credit/debit card (not recommended any more than necessary), swipe it yourself. If you use the "counter pen" at the swipe machine, do NOT handle it with bare hand - use a rubber glove or at least a kleenex
  • Keep doorknobs etc. clean with an anti-viral cleaner like Lysol
  • At first hint of any illness, see a doctor for a prescription for Tamiflu. Do NOT touch anything in doctor's office or hospital with your bare hands - sick folks are touching EVERYTHING there
  • Take probiotics daily, along with vitamins
  • Limit what comes into the home to necessities only. Use latex gloves when handling anything coming into the home, including mail. Touch nothing that others have touched, unless you use gloves. Act as if anything coming into the home can kill you - because it can
  • Do not allow "mail trash" to remain in the home. Using gloves, take it out and burn it
  • Keep hands away from eyes, nose & mouth

KEEP ON HAND:

Anti-Viral Lysol - keep at least 6-10 cans
Non-latex rubber gloves - at least a few boxes
A few dozen masks, minimum (the ones rated for N95 - protects against 95% of particulates)
Probiotics - at least 180 per person
Vitamins - 6 month supply

Classes in Wells

The show this coming Saturday at the Messiah Church in Wells has provided the following info on the classes available. As long as they actually enforce the classes, there should not be any problem with these classes, though I think there should always be at least two classes for the large groups, like street rods, and a 90's to present class for those with newer vehicles.

  • Pre 1949
  • Originals pre 69
  • Best of 50's
  • Best of 60's
  • Best of 70's
  • Best of 80's
  • Muscle Cars
  • Custom
  • Street Rods
  • Trucks pre 69
  • Trucks post 69
  • Special Interest
  • Sports Cars
  • Imports
  • Works in Progress
